a large tornado is seen in the sky over a road

TORNADOES

Tornadoes are violently rotating funnels that extend downward to the ground from severe thunderstorms or tropical storms. Those that are formed over water are known as waterspouts. Whether on land or over the seas these columns can produce swirling winds that can reach over 300 miles per hour causing massive damages to anything in its path.

Although meteorologist can predict when conditions might be right for tornado formation, they can strike at anytime or anywhere with little or no warning. They are not always easily seen and can be transparent until arriving at a spot with debris or movable objects. They are also able to move in any direction and are known to sound like the roaring of an oncoming freight train.

Paying attention to weather reports and being aware of your areas risks and the signs of an approaching tornado can save lives. Families are advised to have a plan and safe room designated with no windows and as many walls as possible between the safe room and the outside if a storm cellar or basement is not available for shelter.
