A landslide is the sudden movement of a column of earth, rocks, mud or debris down a slope, mountain or cliff, endangering lives and causing damages to homes and property. This event is most common in mountainous and hilly regions of the world. They are also known as rock slips, rockslides, and landslips and gravity is the primary driving force for one to occur.
In other cases, landslides are triggered by heavy rainfall, earthquakes, storms, volcanoes and human activities. Not all landslides are fast and sudden. Some are slow-moving over a number of years, eventually leading to the damage of land and property.
