HEAT WAVE

Heat waves are naturally occurring and result from warm air being trapped in the atmosphere. Heatwaves are uncomfortable and can pose serious health risks for infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions. Extreme heat can cause heat stroke and also fatality.

Especially during the summer months, there can be several days of high heat and humidity when temperatures spike above 90 degrees. This extreme heat forces the body to work harder to maintain a normal body temperature. Among weather related hazards in the U.S.A., extreme heat is responsible for the highest yearly number of fatalities. It is important to recognize the symptoms of a heatstroke and learn how to treat it.
