FLOODING

Flooding occurs when an excess of water flows into the dry land as a result of excessive rainfall, storm surges, and also the overflowing of water systems, dams and snow in some parts of the world. This overflow of water onto normally dry land is usually temporary but can lead to the loss of life, injury and damages to property, especially when they occur without warning in the instance of flash flooding.

With or without prior warnings, flooding can cause power outages, stop or stall transportation, damage buildings and vehicles and also bring about other natural disasters such as landslides. It is important to move to higher ground as quickly as possible, especially if you are in a flood prone or high risk area such as along the coastline and other low lying areas inland. Building away from these areas and elevating homes can reduce flood risk.

Water sweeping into the land can knock down individuals and sweep away vehicles trying to move through flood waters.
