FIRES

Fire safety composes a set of guidelines and practices to reduce loss of property and prevent loss of life in the event of a home, workplace or wildfire. There are national building codes for homes and commercial buildings that are standard and must be adhered to during the initial construction and throughout the operating life of the structure.

Such codes include the usage of fire rated material, electrical codes, signage and fire prevention equipment. Families, individuals and employers are encouraged to form and practice a 2-minute home fire escape plan.

FIRE CAUSES

Human error is the leading cause of most home fires and workplace fires can be industry specific in conjunction with human error. Practices such as careless smoking, unattended cooking, children playing with matches, unattended candles and fuel lamps and also space heaters left too close to ignitable materials are the most common causes of fires. Others include electrical fires, arson, mechanical failures such as stoves or machinery and the spread of wildfires.

According to the Edison township fire department in New Jersey, the origin of most home fires begin in the kitchen. Other areas include bedrooms, dens, chimneys, laundry rooms, heating areas, bathrooms, hallways and closets.

FIRE PREVENTION

Fire prevention practices saves lives and property. Equipment such as working smoke detectors and fire extinguishers placed throughout high risk areas of homes and buildings greatly increase a persons chance of surviving a fire and saving their property.

Certified fire safety technicians will advise on the placing, quantity and rating of extinguishers to be installed in the high risk areas of the home or workplace. Fire extinguishers and smoke detectors should be maintained and serviced on a regular schedule.

The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) has standards and guidelines for fire safety practices that are used throughout the world.
